“formed a loch, stretching from the New road to far above Burngrange, and from Kiln-Knowe to the houses in the Townhead. On this expanse of water there were seen floating barrels, boxes, pieces of wood and furniture; and conspicuous among the debris, an octagonal summerhouse making the round of the submerged gardens, accompanied by Burnside wooden bridge, which finally sought a resting place near it’s more stable neighbour, the one at the Auld-Kiln, as if the 'Twa Mauchlin Brig's' wished to have a chat on the strange turn of events which so unexpectedly brought them together. The summerhouse, finding itself unfitted for either a bridge of' a boat, quietly threw itself into the mud at the foot of an adjoining garden.” |
